2025-2026 Faculty Feature - Dr. Julia Mortyakova

Dr. Julia Mortyakova

                                                                

Dr. Mortyakova is Professor and Chair of the Department of Music at Mississippi University for Women (MUW), where she has taught since 2012. Professor Mortyakova recently earned the 2025 Kossen Faculty Excellence Award at MUW. She has expanded music degree programs, created new ensembles, and led successful accreditation reviews.  Some additional achievements include the:

  • Mississippi Arts Commission Performing Arts Fellowships,
  • MUW Excellence in Creative Activity Award
  • 2017 Mississippi Honored Artist

Dr. Mortyakova founded and directs the International Annual Music by Women Festival at the W, now in its 10th year. In addition, Professor Mortyakova has published a Class Piano textbook (2nd edition) and released several albums featuring works by women composers.

She studied at Interlochen, Vanderbilt, NYU, and the University of Miami, with additional training at major music festivals. Her research focuses on existentialism, women composers, and group piano pedagogy, and she frequently presents at national and international conferences.

Dr. Mortyakova is also active in leadership roles, including past President of the College Music Society Southern Region and service on the NASM Commission on Accreditation.
