A resource guide to help students using the Chicago Manual of Style citation method.

Journals vs. Magazines

A journal is a scholarly or professional periodical (e.g., Library Quarterly, New England Journal of Medicine). Journals are normally cited by volume and date. A magazine is a weekly or monthly (or daily) periodical - it is usually more accessible to general users -  that is available in in individual issues (e.g., Scientific American, the New Yorker). Magazines are usually cited by date alone (829).
